Anyway in “The Food of the Gods” Wells just like most early Sci-Fi writers debates the ethical aspect of science. You can feel that like a true man of science he felt the great responsibility of educating the masses through his writings. Of course considering how limited late 19th and early 20th century technology was don’t expect a wild imagination and bizzare occurrences, Most of the things mentioned are possible if they didn’t already happen if the last century. The Food Of The Gods begins with two scientists who stumble across a formula for a food that will make the consumer grow gigantic (they call it “Herakleophorbia 4”, the public call it “Boom Food” and the narrator refers to it as “The Food Of The Gods”). This has modest beginnings in the form of a chicken farm, but things soon go very wrong and poor management results in other creatures gaining access to the food thus resulting in giant ants, wasps, rats ect. The basic plot of the story follows a pair of eccentric scientists who, with the best of intentions, set out to create a treatment which will promote a healthy giantism in living things so as to create a world without scarcity or poverty.
This sets up a clash between the old and the new creatures who have to deal with ignorance and hypocrisy. As these distinctions become ever more pronounced, intolerance and hatred increase. This is a fascinating concept and some may be tempted to see it as a warning about today’s genetically modified foods; I see it as a thought-provoking, well written, fun read similar to other “science causes doom” stories. “The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth” is a science fiction novel that was first published in 1904 by Macmillan.
At even higher doses, McKenna proposed that the mushroom would have acted to “dissolve boundaries,” promoting community bonding and group sexual activities. Consequently, there would be a mixing of genes, greater genetic diversity, and a communal sense of responsibility for the group offspring. Following extensive research in the field of “growth,” Mr. Bensington and Professor Redwood light upon a new mysterious element, a food that causes greatly accelerated development.
I don’t think ideas about mushrooms and societal integration are bad. I started reading to become more familiar with drug culture and history and potential good uses of psychedelics. If you think you enjoyed the book then you haven’t read any good nonfiction.
God, as ever tolerant and benevolent loving creating parent, just says, “You have all the tools, all the wisdom, so when you are sick of creating war, poverty and violence then create something else”. In this Cosmic Computer’s eyes all is valid as all we create teaches us and expands us, and imprints us with valid experiences. As the master computer controller of our bio-system, our DOW is eternal and from this view we all have the time in the world to create and problems only arise from ignorance and fear because we see our physical system as fallible.
The scientists saw thatone type of leaf kept showing up undigested in the chimp pooof the tribe. So they wondered, “Why would these chimps be eating leaves they couldn’t digest? Terence McKenna captivated the attention of the post 1960s counterculture. He was a lecturer, author and ethnobotanist, which means he studied how specific plants shaped human cultures. That of course was a ridiculous dream, but it shows the state of mental excitement into which Mr Bensington got and the real value he attached to his idea, much better than any of the things he said or did when he was awake and on his guard. Or I should not have mentioned it, because as a general rule I do not think it is at all interesting for people to tell each other about their dreams. Then replacing his spectacles again he turned to the patent reading-desk, which immediately, as his elbow came against its arm, gave a coquettish squeak and deposited the paper, with all its diagrams in a dispersed and crumpled state, on the floor.
